Report: Coda could double employee count at Columbus battery plant by 2014— Autoblog Green

Back in May,Coda Automotivechief executive officer Kevin Czingerannounced that Columbus, OH would become hometo the company's"automotive-grade lithium ion battery system manufacturing facility"– if government loans went through. At the time, the announcement seemed a bit premature given that Coda listed its loan application status as"submitted soon."Initially, Coda settled on an even 1,000 employees to man its future battery manufacturing site and predicted a production capacity of 20,000 packs per year.

Now, theColumbus Dispatchreports that Coda's big battery plans may have grown even bigger. According to the report, Coda Automotive has told Ohio Governor Ted Strickland that the proposed battery plant could employ more than twice that, depending on the automaker's success in the electric vehicle market. Coda's application for federal help outlines a two-phase plan that has the company employing 1,000 workers from 2011 to 2013, followed by a second hiring phase that would add roughly 1,100 more to its workforce in 2014.

Again, Coda's grand plans are highly contingent upon the approval of a $400- to $500-million U.S. Department of Energy loan. Governor Strickland recently lobbied the DOE regarding the loan and remains confident that no roadblocks exist. Coda reportedly received word that its loan status has advanced to the next level, but the DOE has yet to reveal a timetable for loan approval.Hat tip to Roy!

Video: Volvo C30 electric undergoes crash testing; robust battery protection system up to the task— Autoblog Green

Volvo C30 electric crash test– Click above to watch videoafter the jump

Watching a vehicle undergo a crash testis a real eye-opener. Not only do these destructive demonstrations show us how well vehicles can handle collisions (or not), but they also remind us that driving can be incredibly dangerous. Hitting an upright pole at a mere 30 miles per hour inVolvo'sC30electric vehicle (EV) concept could result in some serious bodily injury, as the crash video above shows us, but this particular example also reveals something else.

Volvo's C30 EV crash test video shows us that, although a severe frontal impact would render the car a totalled wreck, the vehicle's battery pack appears to have suffered no noticeable damage. Now, it's not like Volvo is trying to imply that the battery survived the ordeal in working order, but the video clearly shows that the integrity of the potentially dangerous li-ion unit remained intact.Hit the jumpto watch the destruction and pay particular attention to the battery pack (highlighted in green) as it survives the assault virtually unscathed.

Rumor: Ford developing green GT supercar successor— Autoblog Green

Ford GT

Back in 2003,Fordgave us theGT supercar– a road-going homage to the iconicGT40race car. Ford discontinued the GT when its high-poweredShelby GT500debuted for the 2007 model year, but now the word around Dearborn is that there may be another top-end Blue Oval supercar coming down the pipeline. This time around, however, things may be a bit greener.

According toMotor Trend, Ford Motor Company executives have suggested that if a GT successor is created, its main focus will be fuel efficiency, citing the possibility of an electric drivetrain. The EV supercar isn't a new idea, after all–Porscheis readying its918 SpyderandMercedes-Benzhas shown us itsSLS E-Cell. Of course, Ford's plans are simply rumormill fodder at this point, but we'll keep our eyes peeled for silent supercars roaming around Dearborn in the coming years.

Gene-ious: Some people genetically driven towards hybrids, electric vehicles— Autoblog Green

coda electric sedan

Coda Sedan– Click above for high-res image gallery

It's in your genes. No, really, it is. A study on identical twins published in the Journal of Consumer Research concludes that consumer preferences are often driven by genetics. The authors of the study, Itamar Simonson of Stanford University and Aner Sela of the University of Florida, examined,"a wide range of consumer judgment and decision-making phenomena"and concluded that,"many - though not all of them - are in fact heritable or influenced by genetic factors."

So, how does this relate to automobiles and, more specifically, to hybrids and electric vehicles? Well, believe it or not, the study actually questioned participants about specific products like chocolate, mustard, sci-fi flicks and eco-friendly cars. The study concludes that if one identical twin preferred eco-friendly autos, the other twin almost always followed suit. The authors wrapped up the study suggesting that,"some people may be born with a tendency to be in the mainstream whereas others tend to live on the edge."So, if you've discovered that your fondness for battery-powered vehicles simply cannot be explained, then you might as well give your parents a pat on the back because your love for eco-friendly autos might've came from them.

Infiniti's first electric vehicle will hit showrooms in 2013; here's the design sketch— Autoblog Green

Though theLeafgrabs most of the electric vehicle (EV)headlines,Nissan's luxury brand,Infiniti, will soon capture some of the spotlight as well. Last year, Nissan announced that the company had at least three EVs in the works. One was the Leaf, the others included theNV200 light commercial vanand a compact four-passenger vehicle bearing the Infiniti logo. We later learned that Infiniti's first EV would bebased on the Leaf's platformand also discovered that this offering would live up to the performance image that the brand has been trying to nurture.

Now there's more. Infiniti, via its Facebook page, has revealed that its first battery-powered vehicle will debut in 2013. The company also posted the design sketch seen above. Admittedly, sketches don't always indicate what we'll see in the finished product, but it's quite obvious that Infiniti has taken cues from its stellarG37 Coupeand applied them to its upcoming EV. A performance-oriented EV with styling cues of the striking G37 Coupe, can it get much better than that?Hat tip to David and Bill!

PRESS RELEASE

Toyota Highlander Crossover Gets Major Revision for 2011

• Revised Styling with New Front Fascia, Hood and Fenders
• New Standard Three-Row Seating with Rear Climate Control
• Four-Cylinder Engine Availability Expanded
• More Powerful and Advanced V6 for Highlander Hybrid
• New User Technology

TORRANCE, Calif. -- Toyota has significantly revised its popular Highlander and Highlander Hybrid crossover sport utility vehicles for 2011, giving them enhanced styling, additional standard amenities and new user technology.

The 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine, which was available only in the Highlander Base grade model for 2010, is now also offered in the SE, the most popular grade (2WD only). The Highlander Hybrid debuts a more powerful and advanced 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine, along with a standard Tech Audio Package and unique exterior design elements.

The 2011 Highlander is available in Base, SE and Limited grades in both two-wheel (2WD) and full-time four-wheel-drive (4WD). A 270-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 is standard on the Limited grade and available for the others. All Highlander Hybrid models are equipped with four-wheel-drive with intelligence and available in Base and Limited grades.

The first-generation Highlander pioneered the midsize crossover utility vehicle segment, ushering in car-like performance, comfort and fuel efficiency yet with SUV-like roominess and versatility. The second-generation Highlander amplifies those attributes and is among the leaders in the segment in standard active and passive safety features.

New Styling Details for 2011
The Highlander gets a sophisticated design update for 2011 featuring a new front fascia, hood and fenders, with the profile freshened by black rockers with chrome accents (gas models only). The headlights and tail lamps are also redesigned, as are the 17-inch alloy wheels. The Limited Grade offers stylish 19-inch wheels and also features silver roof rails. The SE grade gains a power liftgate.

The 2011 Highlander Hybrid is more easily distinguished from the gasoline model by its own unique grille and bumper design. It shares the new fenders and hood with the gas Highlander but features color-keyed rockers with chrome accents, plus vertically stacked fog lamps. The projector beam headlights and redesigned taillights feature blue lens covers. Daytime running lamps are now standard on all Highlander models.

Expanded Amenities and Tech for 2011
The Highlander remains a popular family vehicle and caters to that market more effectively for 2011 with more standard amenities and user technologies. In particular, Base and SE grades feature more comfort and convenience features than previously offered. A standard 50/50 split third-row seat and manual rear climate control have been made standard for all 2011 models.

The new Tech Audio is standard for SE and Limited and optional for Base grade and features a USB port, integrated XM Satellite Radio (includes 90-day trial subscription) and Bluetooth®, helping ensure a wide array of"connected"capabilities for passengers. In the Base grade, this is part of a more comprehensive package that also includes a backup monitor with 3.5-inch multi-information display, an eight-way power drivers seat, tonneau cover, engine immobilizer, easy-clean fabric interior, flip-up liftgate window, fog lamps and black roof rails.

The Highlander Hybrid base grade offers a new Leather Package that includes leather-trimmed front seats with front seat heaters, leather-trimmed steering wheel and shift knob, power moonroof, HomeLink®, auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass, plus an engine immobilizer with security alarm. The optional navigation system is now available for the SE grade (previously only on Limited), while the Limited gains standard automatic climate control for the rear and offers a new perforated leather. The Highlander Hybrid Base grade gains standard easy-clean fabric seating, along with an eight-way power driver's seat, the Tech Audio, the third-row seat and manual rear climate control.

Performance and Efficiency
The Toyota Highlander offers three distinct types of performance: a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine joined the lineup in 2009, offering an EPA-estimated 25 MPG rating in highway driving. The 2.7-liter engine produces 187 horsepower and 186 lb.-ft. of peak torque.

The engine is equipped with a variable intake manifold and dual variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i), which controls phasing on both the intake and exhaust camshafts to optimize torque and fuel efficiency. The four-cylinder engine is teamed exclusively with a standard six-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission.

The available 3.5-liter V6 (standard on Limited) produces 270 horsepower at 6,200 RPM and 248 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,700 RPM. The V6, also, is equipped with dual VVT-i and a variable intake manifold. A five-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission (ECT) offers selectable manual sequential shifting.

The Highlander Hybrid model's Hybrid Synergy Drive features a new, more powerful 3.5-liter V6 for 2011, replacing the previous 3.3-liter V6. The system pairs the gasoline V6 engine with a high-torque electric drive motor-generator for total system output of 280 net horsepower. A second rear-mounted motor provides automatic on-demand four-wheel drive traction. The 2011 Highlander Hybrid receives EPA estimated fuel economy ratings of 28 MPG city and 28 MPG highway.

The 4WD Highlander Hybrid uniquely generates rear-wheel power with a separate electric motor (MGR) that provides additional drive torque on demand. Thus, the Highlander Hybrid 4WD-i system does not require power-transfer gearing or a driveshaft from the front. The system electronically varies front and rear torque distribution depending on traction conditions.

Activating an EV mode switch located on the front center console allows the driver to operate strictly in electric-mode under certain conditions for a limited distance at low speeds, or in some stop-and-go driving conditions. A new ECON drive mode switch activates a throttle control program that reduces the throttle response during acceleration, enhancing fuel economy. The Hybrid System Indicator in the instrument gauge panel provides the driver with a guideline to help maximize fuel consumption.

Handling and Ride
The Highlander continues to build on its strength of delivering one of the most capable, smooth and quiet rides in the segment. Four-wheel independent suspension is via MacPherson struts in front and a dual-link strut rear suspension system. Base and SE Highlander models are equipped with standard 17-inch alloy wheels with 245/65 R17 tires; the Limited features standard 19-inch alloy wheels with 245/55 R19 tires. A direct tire pressure monitoring system is designed to alert the driver if pressure in a tire drops to critical levels. All Highlander models are equipped with four-wheel disc brakes. On conventional Highlander 4WD models, full-time four-wheel drive is available on all V6 grades.

Active Safety
Highlander comes standard with Toyota's Star Safety System™. This system integrates operation of enhanced Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Electric Power Steering (EPS) and the anti-lock brake system (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA).

Enhanced VSC helps the driver maintain control by automatically adjusting engine output and braking force at each wheel under certain conditions while also providing steering assistance in the appropriate direction through Electric Power Steering (EPS). Gasoline Highlander models are also equipped with a straight-line steering feature. When varying traction causes ABS to apply different left/right braking force, the system can apply steering torque to help offset left/right pull.

The Highlander Hybrid employs the advanced Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system. VDIM is designed to enhance handling, traction and braking systems that normally react to vehicle driving conditions by anticipating tire slippage before a skid, slide or wheel spin occurs and helps to make corrections in a smooth, progressive way. In addition to integrating all of the Highlander's dynamic control systems (VSC, TRAC, BA, EPS, EBD and ABS), the VDIM system also employs powerful proprietary software to integrate the Electronic Throttle Control with intelligence (ETC-i) and Electronically Controlled Brakes (ECB).

All Highlander models incorporate a corner-braking feature. Harnessing the integration of the vehicle's dynamic control systems, this feature limits brake pressure on inside wheels during cornering to help enhance control through the turn. Standard on all models, Hill-Start Assist Control helps prevent the vehicle from rolling backward from a stop by applying braking pressure for approximately two seconds.

Downhill Assist Control (DAC) is standard equipment on all gas 4WD models. The DAC feature is designed to maintain a constant speed and maintain handling and steering control by reducing wheel lock under braking even at slow speeds on slippery descents.

Occupant Safety
Highlander comes standard with seven airbags. These include advanced driver and front passenger airbags, front seat-mounted side airbags and a driver's knee airbag. Roll-sensing side curtain airbags help to protect the occupants of all three rows in the event of certain side collisions or vehicle rollovers. Additionally, all Highlander models are standard equipped with front active headrests.

Comfort and Convenience
Standard features on all Highlander models include front and rear air conditioning; eight-way adjustable driver's seat (10-way on Limited); power door locks and windows with driver's window jam protection and auto-up/down feature; manual tilt and telescopic steering wheel; cruise control; multi-function keyless entry system; UV-reduction windshield and rear privacy glass; digital clock; dual sun visors with vanity mirrors and sliding extensions; conversation mirror; illuminated entry system; scheduled maintenance indicator light; full-size spare tire and more.

The Highlander SE and Limited grades feature a standard backup camera with a 3.5-inch multi-information display; this feature is available for Base grade models for 2011 as part of the optional Tech Package. The display includes a backup camera monitor, clock, outside temperature, warning messages, and cruise information that includes average fuel economy, average speed, distance to empty, current fuel economy, and trip timer. On models equipped with the optional navigation system, the backup camera's images are viewed on the seven-inch navigation screen.

Options
A variety of available options and accessories include a voice-activated touch screen navigation system with an eight-inch screen; JBL premium audio; leather seat trim with heated front seats, and a power tilt/slide moonroof. The optional tow package for V6 models enables up to 5,000-pound maximum towing capacity. The four-cylinder tow package enables up to 3,500 pounds of maximum towing capacity. A power liftgate that can be opened and closed with a key fob is an available option on the Base grade and standard on SE and Limited.

Exterior Design
Designed at Calty Design Research in Newport Beach, Calif., the second-generation Highlander moves away from traditional SUV styling cues. Clean, sculpted lines, a wide, stable stance and muscular contours give Highlander a contemporary, dynamic presence. The Base grade Highlander could be mistaken for an upgrade model with its six-spoke 17-inch machined alloy wheels, color-keyed power remote outside mirrors, and silver-painted front grille. The Limited looks the luxury part with chrome door handles and roof rails, puddle lamps and rear spoiler.

Interior Design
The Highlander provides an open, airy and versatile interior with seating for seven or up to 95.4 cubic feet of total cargo capacity (94.1 for Highlander Hybrid). There are numerous storage compartments throughout the cabin, along with 10 cup holders, four bottle holders, two front and one cargo-area 12-volt auxiliary power outlets and cargo area tie down hooks.

The Base and SE grades feature a center console, shift knob with silver-painted accents and front driver and passenger assist grips. The center console, shift knob and assist grip on the Limited grade feature wood grain-style trim. Styling features on the inside of the Highlander Hybrid include a silver and wood grain-style interior trim with chrome door handle accents, Optitron meters with blue graphics and a power meter with a hybrid system indicator.

The headrests are adjustable in two ways on the Base grade and four different ways on SE and Limited. The second row provides 40/20/40 split seatbacks. The seat functions as either a three-person bench or, by removing the Center Stow™ seat, a pair of captain's chairs complete with armrests, creating a convenient walk-through area between the seats for easier access to the third row. A Center Stow™ center console can also be placed between the seats to provide additional storage. The second row also slides fore and aft and reclines.

Access to the third-row is made easy by placing the walk-in lever at an easy to reach position at the bottom of the passenger-side second-row seat. Standard one-touch levers inside the cargo area allow the second-row seats to fold forward and flat. The third-row seats function in a similar manner, using a lever in the back of the seat.

Production of the conventional engine Highlander, Toyota's 12th North American-built model, began in October 2009 at the company's plant in Princeton, Indiana. Moving the Highlander assembly line to this facility represented a $450 million investment.

Limited Warranty
Toyota's 36-month/36,000 mile basic new-vehicle warranty applies to all components other than normal wear and maintenance items. Additional 60-month warranties cover the powertrain for 60,000 miles and corrosion with no mileage limitation. Toyota dealers have complete details on the limited warranty.

BMW announces trial markets for ActiveE electric car effort— Autoblog Green

BMW ActiveE concept– Click above for high-res image gallery

The evolution ofBMW's electric vehicle program, Project i, goes sort of like this: fromMini E concepttoleasing that car to happy customersto theActiveE conceptto field tests of the larger sedan next year and then on tothe Megacity EV, which is scheduled for 2013. Those last two steps have not yet happened, but today we learn a bit more about how and where the ActiveE, a modified 1 Series Coupe, will prowl the streets. BMW has announced that the following U.S. cities and areas will get the ActiveE:
  • New York City
  • Los Angeles
  • San Diego
  • San Francisco
  • Sacramento
  • Boston
  • select markets in Connecticut
So, yeah, that makes California and the East Coast the lucky ones. We have heard thata few hundred ActiveEs would be tested around the U.S., but BMW didn't give any more details on the number of vehicles coming to each location today. The field trial starts next summer, so we don't have that much longer to wait.

What can drivers expect from the ActiveE? BMW says that"realistic simulations"show the all-electric car can go from 0-60 in approximately 8.5 seconds and the car has a top speed of around 90 miles per hour (electronically limited). Range is estimated at 100 miles. Unlike theMini E, the ActiveE can seat four and carry about seven cubic-feet of stuff. For people used to driving the tiny Minis, this will be a welcome change.

PRESS RELEASE

BMW Announces Markets for BMW ActiveE Field Trial

New York Metro and Greater Los Angeles will again be included and be joined by Metropolitan markets of San Diego, San Francisco, Sacramento and Boston

Woodcliff Lake, NJ– September 23, 2010... Later today at Opportunity Green in Los Angeles, BMW will announce the markets which will participate in the BMW ActiveE field trial when it begins in summer 2011. The New York metro market and the Greater Los Angeles Area will again play key roles. In Southern California, the metropolitan market of San Diego will be included. Northern California will be included in the BMW ActiveE field trial with the Greater San Francisco and Sacramento areas. In addition to select markets in Connecticut, Boston will provide new opportunities to gain experience in this trial.

The BMW ActiveE field trial will build on the success and experience gained during the MINI E field trial, now in its second year. Experience gained in this second-phase trial will prepare the BMW Group for the launch of its purpose-designed Megacity Vehicle in 2013.

"We were the first automaker to put 450 electric vehicles on US roads for daily use. We have gained so much insight into living with an EV with our MINI E pioneers over the last year,"said Rich Steinberg, Manager of Electric Vehicle Operations and Strategy for BMW of North America."Partners like the City of New York's Mayor's Office, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and Southern California Edison have also been critical to the success of the program. We're looking forward to working with more drivers in more markets to build on our base of experience as we get ready for the launch of the Megacity Vehicle, and we look forward to even greater collaboration with the BMW ActiveE."

"In addition to our existing and new pioneers in each of these markets, we are looking forward to working with our new strategic partners: the City of San Francisco Department of Transportation, San Francisco Clean Cities Coalition, Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the City of Boston, San Diego Gas& Electric, Pacific Gas and Electric Company, Northeast Utilities and subsidiary Connecticut Light& Power, Sacramento Municipal Utilities District and New Jersey Clean Cities Coalition,"added Steinberg.

The BMW ActiveE field trial is set to begin in Summer 2011.

BMW ActiveE: the next phase of the BMW Group's ongoing EV development

A glimpse of the BMW ActiveE was first seen with the Concept ActiveE at the North American International Auto Show in January, 2010. Based on the chassis of a BMW 1 Series Coupe it features a newly developed electric drivetrain and a lithium-ion battery-packed developed in cooperation with SB-LiMotive. It offers four passenger seating and approximately seven cubic-feet of luggage capacity.

The vehicle concept and drive system provide the agility and dynamic acceleration performance which are characteristic of the BMW 1 Series Coupe. Based on realistic simulations, the sprint from 0-60 mph requires approximately 8.5 seconds. The maximum speed of the vehicle is electronically limited at around 90 mph.

The lithium-ion battery pack specially developed for this vehicle supplies energy to the motor and all other functions of the BMW Concept ActiveE. For the first time, storage cells are used which were developed especially for use in automobiles by the BMW Group in collaboration with the cooperation partner SB LiMotive. The aim is to use the best available technology in the area of energy storage as part of the development of the Megacity Vehicle. The lithium-ion batteries of the BMW Concept ActiveE have their own liquid cooling system and intelligent battery management system, which are key elements in increasing both the storage capacity and the durability of the battery cells. These systems also ensure that the long range can be maintained largely independent of external climatic conditions. The storage system developed for the BMW Concept ActiveE enables a real-world range of about 100 miles on a single charge, depending on conditions.

The climate control systems developed for the BMW Concept ActiveE can also be activated via smartphone. This option includes a timer function so the driver can ensure that the vehicle is conveniently pre-cooled or pre-heated before getting into it in the morning, for example. Climatic pre-conditioning optimizes not only ride comfort but also the operating status of the energy storage system in the sense that it maximises the range of the vehicle. The control of the heating and air conditioning system by mobile phone is made available through BMW ConnectedDrive. The BMW Concept ActiveE demonstrates the extensive range of options for using these services with the full integration of a smartphone connection into the vehicle infotainment system.

A future-oriented technology which runs across all brands: electro-mobility as a mainstay of EfficientDynamics.

With the BMW ActiveE, the BMW Group demonstrates the continuation of its project i research and development activities geared towards achieving emissions-free mobility independent of fossil fuels. It builds on the significant experience that had already been gained through the MINI E field trial which recently entered its second year.

The BMW Group is developing electro-mobility as an additional central mainstay of its EfficientDynamics strategy. Electric drive provides an additional option for individual mobility, alongside the ongoing optimization of the pure combustion engine, the market launch of BMW ActiveHybrid technology in production vehicles and the BMW Hydrogen 7 as evidence of the suitability of hydrogen drive for everyday use.

Project i brings together the BMW Group's activities relating to the development of production vehicles with electric drive. The focus is on the conception of a production Megacity Vehicle which fulfils the requirements of a sustainable mobility solution for urban areas, with one option being electric drive.

The BMW ActiveE field trial will begin in summer 2011 leading up to the Megacity Vehicle in 2013.

Coda CEO on electric sedan's $44,900 price:"Price is not the decisive factor in electric cars."— Autoblog Green

Kevin Czinger, president and CEO of Coda Automotive, has drawn the electric vehicle (EV) battle line, and it's not where most of us expected it to be. Instead of competing on price, the vehicle that grew out of the Miles neighborhood electric vehicles will fight it out over features. The tell? Coda announced yesterday thatthe all-electric sedan will cost $44,900($37,400 after a federal tax incentive of $7,500). This is much higher than similar offerings fromNissanand the plug-in hybridVoltfromGeneral Motors.

So, why price the relatively unknown EV so high, compared to the better-known vehicles? As Czingertold AutoblogGreen ages ago(or, at least, that's what it feels like, but it was really last October), the secret to the Coda Sedan's success is its battery. This week, he reiterated this stance when he said his car has something those others don't: a big (33.8 kWh) lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery. The Leaf has a 24 kWh pack and the Volt just 16 kWh. Also, Czinger said, Coda's pack is reliable in all seasons and will pretty much work in any weather or climate in the U.S., from well below 0 degrees Fahrenheit through to conditions a bit above 100 degrees. This is because the Coda Sedan uses a very high-rate 6.5 kW air compressor that takes dehumidified and either heated or cooled air and recirculates it over the pack. Coda said this reliable battery will provide 120 miles of range, and that might be why Czinger told reporters in a conference call yesterday:
I think that what the EV1 showed is that price is not the decisive factor in electric cars. Let's see what the market says. I think the 40 percent additional range from a 40 percent larger battery is absolutely vital.
This may or may not be true, but last year,Czinger told usthat the sedan would have a sales price of under $30,000 in California. This didn't happen, but California residents can get close if they and the Coda sedan qualify for the state's $5,000 rebate on top of the $7,500 from the Feds.

On the call, Czinger praised Apple's marketing strategy, saying that representatives from some of the big automakers have said to him that if they could use an Apple store/mall-based sales method– as Coda is planning to do, with one store, on top of online sales– they would use that model. It looks like Czinger also approves of the other sales tactic Apple is known for: expensive products.

Another connection Czinger wants to draw between his car company and Apple is the passion of the customers."From a brand standpoint, we are a product and a movement,"he said, noting that even though Nissan is promoting its all-electric offerings, the automaker is also looking to increase the number of ICE vehicles it sells in the coming years. Coda, on the other hand, is all about electric vehicles, and EVs only. We've long said Nissan is making a big bets on EVs, but it looks like Coda is the automaker that's really rolling the dice on battery-powered automobiles.

Honda considers doubling production of CNG-powered Civic GX— Autoblog Green

2010 Honda Civic GX– Click above for high-res image gallery

When assembling a list of green cars fromHonda, the usual suspects include vehicles like theInsight,CivicHybrid and perhaps even theFCX Clarity. Often overlooked, though no less green, is the natural gas-fueledCivic GX. In fact, the CNG-powered GX has topped the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy's (ACEEE)listofgreenest vehicles in landfor seven years and counting. The GX is also the only mass-market compressed natural gas vehicle available in the U.S. But with reported sales of less than 2,000 GXs in 2009, using the term"mass-market"doesn't seem quite right.

Just days ago,Honda confirmedthat its natural gas-burning GX model would still be offered when the next-gen Civic debuts for the 2012 year. But the story doesn't end there. Elmer Hardey, Honda's senior manager of alternative vehicles, spoke with the folks over at Hybrid Cars and outlined the company's plans for the GX in this way:
Anticipating growth in sales of CNG vehicles, not only in California but nationwide. We're considering doubling sales in the next two- to three-year horizon. If a customer wants to move away from petroleum, then CNG and electric vehicles are a good choice. Obviously, battery electric vehicles are a further choice away from petroleum than a hybrid or plug-in hybrid. Maybe you want to move away from oil and use a U.S.-based resource. Natural gas fits that need very effectively
Hardey closed the interview with this,"There's no chance that Honda will develop a new dedicated model that runs on CNG."
