Plug In America's electric vehicle PSA with Fabio– Click above to watch videoafter the jump

As promised, the latest PSA fromPlug In Americafeatures a suave, reassuring electric vehicle proponent: Fabio. Following in the footsteps of the previous two PSAs,"Cell Phone"and"Ocean Crude,"the ad, called"Hype,"is based on Apple's Mac vs. PC ads. Actress and Plug In America founding board member Alexandra Paul, who came up with the idea for the PSAs, said that, even this long after Fabio's breakthrough on the pop culture scene,"the man's still got it."She also said:
We needed someone who was the epitome of handsome, manly and suave. George Clooney is an EV owner, but was working when we filmed. Fabio happens to own a lot of fast cars and motorcycles and was very impressed with the high performance of the Tesla in which he was driven to the set. And yes, he still has that magnetism.
The PSAs are also running on Hulu and on an ABC affiliate in the Washington, D.C. area, but you can enjoy the beefcake– excuse me, the"Face"–after the jump. You can also watch the other two released PSAshereand stay tuned for the rest of the bunch over the next few months.

PRESS RELEASE

BRING IN THE FACE! PLUG IN AMERICA'S THIRD PSA STARS FABIO

Seven Short Spots Entertain and Educate About Benefits of Plug-In Electric Vehicles

LOS ANGELES, CA-Nov. 30, 2010--Plug In America today releases"Hype,"the third of its seven educational Public Service Announcements (PSAs), this one starring Fabio. Plug In America's first two PSAs have been snatched up by Hulu, where they're running now, and are hitting the television airwaves during such programs as"EnergyNOW!"a weekly news-magazine shown on a Washington D.C. ABC affiliate.

Why Fabio for PSA number three?

"We needed someone who was the epitome of handsome, manly and suave,"says actress and Plug In America founding board member Alexandra Paul, who spearheaded and produced the spots."George Clooney is an EV owner, but was working when we filmedt. Fabio happens to own a lot of fast cars and motorcycles and was very impressed with the high performance of the Tesla in which he was driven to the set. And yes, he still has that magnetism. I cannot explain it, but the man's still got it."

The seven PSAs, each between 30 and 45 seconds, were written and produced by a professional cast and crew of 60, many of whom have driven EVs for up to nine years. They donated their time to Plug In America, the nonprofit organization leading the nation's plug-in vehicle movement. Another new spot will be released roughly every three weeks through February. Click here to see the first spot,"Cell Phone,"and here to see the second,"Ocean Crude."These and"Hype"are also viewable on Plug In America's website. Their embed codes are below. Click here to view"The Making of Plug In America's PSAs,"a 27-minute video.

The PSA's spoof Apple's"Mac vs. PC"ads, replacing Macs with Electric Vehicles (EVs) and PCs with gas cars. Driving home the superiority of plug-ins, they address topics such as the true cost of gasoline, the endless maintenance of gas cars, the ease of plugging in to charge, oil spills and range anxiety.

"The PSAs are designed to engage viewers through humor, then educate them about the benefits of plug-in vehicles,"said Paul, a long-time environmental activist also known for her work on TV's"Baywatch."

The spots all link to Plug In America's recently updated website (details here), which includes pages tracking global production and delivery of plug-in vehicles and electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) and chargers, state and federal purchasing incentives, common plug-in vehicle myths and congressional support for plug-ins.

Actors featured in the spots, which were shot in Santa Monica, CA earlier this year, include Stephen Zimpel, appearing as"Electric,"and Marvin Campbell, appearing as"Gas."Campbell has driven a Toyota RAV4 EV for years and owns two of them. The PSAs were directed by Eric Swenson, a visual effects supervisor and Tesla owner; written by Swenson and fellow Plug In America executive committee member Jeff U'Ren, an Emmy Award-winning editor and former GM EV1 driver; and edited by U'Ren.

In a matter of days, Plug In America raised thousands of dollars from its members and supporters around the globe to pay the hard costs of production.

"We're at a historic turning point with the imminent delivery of the cleanest-running vehicles ever manufactured,"said Plug In America President Dan Davids."Our most important job now is to educate consumers about their value. Our goal is rapid mass adoption."

Others who volunteered their talents to produce the PSAs include Peter Krajewski, director of photography; Steven Latham, producer; Leslie Wilson, assistant director/line producer; Cambria Hankin, casting director; and actors Colette Divine and J. Karen Thomas, both of whom appeared in"Who Killed the Electric Car?"They have driven a Toyota RAV4 EV for more than five years.

Carlos Ghosn: Electric vehicle profitability may come"within next 3 years"— Autoblog Green

When the discussion turns to battery-powered cars,Renault-Nissanchief executive officer, Carlos Ghosn, is one outspoken, optimistic individual. In fact, it'd safe to say that Ghosn'sbullish outlook for the electric vehicle(EV) segment is unmatched by any of his automotive peers. From claims of EVs accounting forten percent of global sales in 2020to promises that Renault-Nissan will have enoughcapacity to produce 500,000 electricsper year when demand, well, demands it, Ghosn never misses an opportunity to talk up the Alliance's electric dreams.

He's at it again. In an interview with Bloomberg Television last Wednesday, Ghosn reiterated some of his previous claims, but also dropped in something new. The bullish CEO opened with these words:

There are customers who want really zero emission cars. This segment is going to grow with time.
When asked about profiting from the sales of EVs, Ghosn offered this revelation:
When we will be reaching this level, overall product lineup will be profitable. This may happen within next three years.
TheNissan Leafstarts at $32,780 in the U.S. and it's hard to imagine that the automaker could profit at that price point, but Ghosn says it's true, so our doubts should be erased. Right?

Report: Audi bringing plug-in hybrid in 2014— Autoblog Green

Audi e-tron concept

Audi e-tron concept– Click above for high-res image gallery

By the year 2020,Audihopes to be the"leading premium seller of electric vehicles,"Franciscus van Meel, the automaker's manager for electric mobility, toldAutoWeekduring a recent technical workshop at the company's headquarters in Ingolstadt, Germany. In addition to launching a number of hybrid vehicles (including theA8andQ5) over the next few years, Audi plans to debut a plug-in hybrid in 2014.

Exactly what sort of plug-in hybrid we'll actually see hasn't been disclosed just yet, but the whole business is part of Audi'se-trondivision– the folks that gave us beauties like theR8-based e-tron supercar (pictured above) that debuted at the 2009Frankfurt Motor Show.

Furthermore, Audi's board member for technology, Michael Dick, says that by 2020, he wants to see the automaker's internal combustion engines improve efficiency by 30 percent, with 5 percent of the brand's lineup to be purely electric. That's a tall order, indeed, but with parent companyVolkswagenAG aiming to be the number one producer of hybrid and electric cars before the end of the next decade, the four-ringed automaker's quest for electrification isn't as far-fetched as you might think.

LA 2010: driving the Wheego Whip LiFe, the electric car from an aggressive little company— Autoblog Green

Wheego LiFe

Wheego Whip– Click above for high-res image gallery

Where do you go when you're starting with"The Cadillac of Neighborhood Electric Vehicles"? If you'reWheego Electric Cars, a U.S. EV manufacturer that uses bodies built by China's Shuanghuan Automobile that look suspiciously like aFortwobut are totallynot-a-Smart, then the answer is to get aggressively into the full-speed electric vehicle game. That's just what happened at theLos Angeles Auto Showwhen CEO Mike McQuary took to the floor of the Wheego booth and lashed out againstNissan,Codaand many other electric car players. The message: you're all doing it wrong.

Los Angeles is the perfect place to launch the 70 mile per hour top speed, 100-mile range LiFe car, McQuary said, not only because zero tailpipe emissions can help reduce air pollution, but because:
In Los Angeles, perhaps more than any other city in America, you are what you drive. People's identities are wrapped up in the cars that they drive. If you go upstairs in some of the larger booths, I think the message is clear: buy a luxury sports car and you, too, can be rich. You can be famous, you can be a celebrity. You can have a beautiful wife. You can have a sexy girlfriend. Heck, if you get the right sports car, you can have a beautiful wifeanda sexy girlfriend. But what we're going to tell you in our booth is that that's not the Wheego message. The Wheego message is a bit of a challenge to that thinking. To paraphrase John F. Kennedy, ask not what your car can do for you, but ask what your car can do for your country.
That all sounds good, but McQuary followed it up by getting mean, as you can read after the jump.

Photos copyright©2009 Sebastian Blanco/ Weblogs, Inc.

wheego CEO Mike McQuary

By way of introduction to his company, McQuary said sometimes it's easier to define oneself by saying what one isn't. To that end, he said Wheego is not like Tesla and he was not like Tesla CEO Elon Musk:
Up until two years ago, I thought Elon Musk was the cologne I wore in college. Apparently Elon Musk is a genius. I have never met him, so I'll just have to take his word for it. Also unlike Tesla, we make affordable electric cars. ...
Unlike Chevrolet, we make electric cars. I don't believe that competitors should snipe at each other in an emerging space and I believe that a rising tide lifts all boats in a space, but when they launched their ad campaign centered around the concept of peace of mind, meaning that you don't have odometer anxiety, I thought it was a particular cheap shot and I will take every opportunity to call them out for the hybrid that they are. ...
Nissan has a great car. Anyone considering an electric car should go consider a Nissan Leaf. I think Carlos Ghosn is probably the smartest auto executive in the industry today. Everyone should consider one of those cars, ifyou live in one of the seven or eight cities where it's actually going to be available and, in this economic crisis, if you don't mind your hard earned yen– I mean dollars– going to a Japanese company.
That last dig is a little precious, considering the LiFe's Chinese roots. Sure, Wheego's car may have 75 percent U.S. content (detailshere), but the Leaf is going to be built in the U.S. in the near future, so it seems like McQuary is just attacking for the heck of it. Maybe he feels he has to, since the LiFe,priced at $32,995or, $25,495 after a $7,500 federal tax credit, is slightly more expensive than the much-better-equipped and designed Leaf. In any case, the LiFe will begin shipping to 22 dealers across the U.S. (who all needed to buy six LiFe vehicles, one in each available color) before the end of the year. If you don't live in an area with a dealer, Wheego will ship the car to you. The company is ready to go, too. McQuary said his company could make and sell a few thousand vehicles next year. So far, Wheego has collected around 200 orders for the LiFe. The company sold roughly 300 copies of the low-speed version, that supposedCadillac of NEVs.

wheego lifewheego life

Driving the LiFe

Presenting a different, friendlier side of the company wasPresident Jeff Boyd, who rode with us during a quick spin around the LA Convention Center in the LiFe. The car's 30-kWh lithium-iron battery (from where the car gets its name, from the chemical symbols Li and Fe) gives a solid center of gravity to the car, but you can't get past the cheap look and finish of the interior on the production model we drove. The vinyl seats we suitable, but not extermely comfortable. The production model we drove was also a little noisy, especially when we stepped on the go pedal. Boyd said customers enjoy the sounds."They want to hear the car go,"he said,"they like some feedback. They want some whirr or some sound on acceleration. So we left that in by design."

The LiFe has three transmission modes: normal, sport (which bumps the motor controller to work at 650 amps instead of 550, which in turn raises the 0-30 acceleration rate by around 25 percent) and eco mode that extends range. The car also has four-wheel, anti-lock breaks, tire pressure monitoring system and regenerative breaking. The brakes felt soft, which is, again, something Boyd said customers wanted. They didn't like the firmer, grippier regen the car had earlier, he said, so the engineers toned it down. The car does creep at up to three mph and acceleration– in any mode– is decent but nothing to write home about. Boyd said the creep was put in there to make driving the LiFe as similar as possible to driving a standard gasoline vehicle. Other things to note are a dash that is dominated by a bright LCD screen that is easily visible in strong sunlight and the car's small size, which means it's a fine urban performer– as anyone who's handled a slightly smaller Fortwo can attest.

Our short drive wasn't enough to give a full recommendation or review, but sometimes one spin around the block is all you need. This is going to be a tough sell, given the other plug-in vehicles available in the very near future. Boyd said he's willing to let the market to decide which electric car is right for people and doesn't concede any advantages to his competitors just yet. It won't be long before we will all see what those results are.

LA 2010: more details on the Honda Fit, including that weird extra fob— Autoblog Green

honda fit ev

Honda Fit EV concept– Click above for high-res image gallery

WhenHondaputs theFit EVon sale in 2012, it will come with a device that, as far as we can recall, will be unique in the plug-in vehicle space: a little something Honda calls a"pocket-friendly, interactive remote"(basically, a key fob) that will interact with the vehicle and display,"the vehicle's state of charge, initiate charging and activate the air conditioning, even while connected to the grid, to reduce the drain on the battery at start-up."Think of it as a physical version of the smartphone app that other vehicles will use for this sort of functionality (the Fit EV will also have an app). We think a fob like this is a bizarre little add-on, but maybe Honda has got some sort of inside information that the non-smartphone owning masses really want to carry an extra piece of plastic around with them.

More important, though, is the work that Honda will do in the intervening years to get the Fit EV, with a li-ion battery from an unnamed supplier, ready for business. Honda will work with three different groups on an electric vehicle test fleet program: Stanford, which will test user behavior and usability; the City of Torrance, which will test what a local government can do to promote plug-in vehicles and educate citizens about the benefits of such cars and Google, which will add the Fit EVs to theRechargeIT car sharing fleetand track energy consumption. For now, Honda is keeping the number of vehicles that will go to each partner a secret but the first vehicles should be delivered early next year.

Lastly, we tried to get some more information about the Fit's three drive modes. This far out from launch, it's hard to know exactly what the numbers will be when the car hits dealers, but Honda did say during the car's reveal that engaging eco mode would boost the range by up to 17 percent. Honda wouldn't say how much range sport mode would take away, just that the eco mode gets 25 percent more range than sport mode. You can watch Honda CEO Takanobu Ito unveil the Fit EV at theLA Auto Showhere.
