SF Bay Area receives $5M grant to fund installation of 5,000-plus chargers— Autoblog Green

As the U.S. readies for an expected onslaught of electric vehicles (EVs), the San Francisco Bay Area is quickly becoming one of the regions that's particularly well-prepared for EVs. In late 2008, mayors from the Bay Area joined together to approve a multi-billion dollar plan that would eventually bring thousands of EV charging stations to the area. This initial plan successfully kicked off an ongoing drive to bring even more chargers to the Bay Area.

Late last week, theBay Area Air Quality Management Districtapproved a five million dollar grant to fund the installation of 3,000 residential chargers and 2,000 public charging units. In addition, the grant will cover the installation of 50 fast chargers that will be conveniently located within close proximity to the freeway system that traverses the Bay Area. Installation of many of these charging units will be completed within the next year, thus providing the Bay Area with the necessary charging equipment to support the launch of theNissan LeafandChevrolet Volt, both of which will beheaded to San Franby year's end.
